William Douglas (1672 - c1760)
of Dumfriesshire, about his romance with Annie Laurie (1682–1764). as a 
soldier in the Royal Scots, he wrote the words to this old Scottish love song
after falling for the daughter of Robert Laurie, the first baronet of Maxwelton, 
three miles east of Moniaive in Dumfries and Galloway.
